Gisborne Intermediate

Next year I am going to be heading off to Gisborne Intermediate. I am really excited to be starting a new school and hopefully meeting some new friends. I made a goal that next year I am going to try something that I have never tried before. I also chose some quotes for next year. Here they are.

Turanganui Kapa Haka

A few weeks ago we had the kapa haka festival. We had it at the showgrounds. Our school does the Kapa Haka every 2 years. One year we go to our marae, and then the other year we do the Kapa Haka festival. I was the leader for one song. We did 6 songs. Our pepeha, Tehei, Pure a nei, E minaka ana, the haka and He honore, which I led. Here are some photos of us.

The other day we had our annual school athletics, it was really fun. I got first in my 100m heat. Fourth in my 100m final. Second in my 200m heat, and Eighth in 200m final. Then I came second in long jump. Fifth equal in high jump and in ball throw, I don't know. Next week I might go to interschools and compete in long jump and maybe even sprinting.

Athletics Training

The other week we started training for athletics. In our school athletics we do long jump, high jump, sprinting and ball throw. Last year I placed 1st in high jump and 1st in long jump, and 2nd in the whole of Gisborne for long jump.
Our school athletics is next week on Tuesday, I can't wait!

Open day down at Hamanatau!

Last week we had a open day down at Hamanatua. We had it so we could inform the community and our school what we have been doing down there and how they could help with our project. Each group got to share what we have been working on. Here are some photos.

Media is a Construction

This week when Koka Maria came in she taught us about media and how it is never completely accurate. We filled out a slide about what she taught us. Here is my learning...

Replying to Blog Commenting

Last week Koka Maria came in and taught us about replying to a comment someone has given us. We got to see examples of other people's blog when they had replied to a comment that someone had given to them. We had to fill out a slide about what we could have, what we should have and what we could have in a reply.
Here is the slide that I filled out.

Meng Foon Gave me a Spoon

Just joking, Meng Foon didn't give me a spoon, but today the mayor of Gisborne, Meng Foon, came to see us. He talked to us about our actions speak louder than words project. Each group shared what they were doing down at Hamanatua stream. A mayor normally is normally responsible for overseeing financial decisions for the town and they can also decide who is the deputy mayor and decide who is the chairperson for each committee. Mayors are normally in office for 3 years until they have another vote for who is the next mayor, unless removed from office by the local council. He was kind enough to take some photos with us.

Talent Quest!

Yesterday we had our annual school talent quest. I was in 4 items, one with my band, me singing a solo, me in a ukulele group and jump jam. At first I did not want to sing a solo because I was so nervous, but then my teachers and parents convinced me that I should. I was so nervous that I was shaking, I got up there and did it. I am so proud of myself for doing it. I've had a lot of people say to me that I was amazing.

Hanamatua

Over the last term we have been working down at Hanamatua stream. Here are some photos. We have been doing this firstly because our inquiry focus is actions speak louder than words and secondly because we are the kaitiaki of Hamanatua stream. Here are some photos of us.

Speeches

Over the past term we have been writing speeches. Every year we have speech competitions in our school. Yr 3 to 6s do speeches. Every year we normally have class speeches and then the teachers in that class pick some people in each year to go to the final, but this year we had semi finals. I did my speech in front of my class, and then I got chosen to go to the semi finals, but sadly I didn't get through to the finals. My speech was about, why everyone should compost! Here is my speech.

Intro
Did you know that when compost decomposes at a landfill, it makes a gas that contributes to global warming. Global warming, what's that you ask? Well, global warming is when the earth's temperatures get hotter and hotter and the ice caps melt. Which means rising sea levels and animals losing their homes. So today I am going to talk to you about why I think everyone should compost.
What is Compost?                                                                                                              Compost is organic matter that is made up of green waste, such as food scraps, garden waste or manure, and brown waste, such as wood chips, leaves or straw. When the green waste and the brown waste in the compost bin decomposes, it turns into dirt that is very good for our plants.
Global Warming                                                                                                                  Firstly, one of the the reasons you should have a compost bin is because when compostable waste goes into a landfill, it makes methane gas. Methane gas is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Global warming needs stop soon otherwise some coastal communities could be covered in water. But even worse some already are. However, when your compost decomposes in the compost bin, it doesn’t emit methane gas into the air, instead it gives you good compost you can use in your garden.
More Room at the Landfills and no more Toxic Sludge                                                         If we all had a compost bin, there will be more room in the landfills. Why do we want more room? Well on january the 1st, China stopped taking all our rubbish. We used to give them a lot of our rubbish to put in their country. That is fair enough. They don’t deserve to store all the rubbish we make. Also since food scraps have a lot of water in them, when it mixes with other things at the landfill, it creates a toxic sludge called leachate. Leachate can leak into our waterways, lakes and streams and can poison the fish and other animals that live in them. It also pollutes the water that we drink, making the water bad to drink.
Compost is Good for our Plants                                                                                             Compost is a really good natural fertilizer for our plants. If you have a compost bin, there is no more paying for expensive, unnatural fertilizer that pollutes our rivers and water. Compost is very good for our plants, because the compost is very high in nutrients. It is also great because it helps the soil hold moisture and it attracts earthworms and many other things that are good for growing tasty vegetables like brussel sprouts. Wink, wink.
Conclusion
Wouldn’t it be good to say to people that you are stopping global warming just by composting your food? I know I can. Can YOU? So today go home and say to your parents, we need to start composting!” It’s simple, save the earth, get a compost bin and start composting!

Cross Country

A few weeks ago we had our school cross country. We did our cross country on the sand dunes near the school. The yr 6 girls went first to race. We had to do two laps of the whole cross country course. I came 9th out of around 30 year 6 girls.

The Wonderling

This term we are going to be reading a book called the Wonderling. I have already read it before, but it will be good to read it again. The Wonderling is about a fox like creature called Number 13, he only has one ear and can do everything a human can do. He lives at Miss Carbuncle's home for wayward and misbegotten creatures (or commonly known as the home.) The home is like a prison, he gets treated like a slave.
I would totally recommend this book I loved it when I read it. Also after we read each chapter we have to do an activity on it. Today we read chapter 3 and then we had to write a headline, we would put in a newspaper article, if we were reviewing it. I chose, why reach for the stars, when the stars are out of reach.

Soccer!!!

Last term we started playing soccer on Saturdays, and my team is currently coming second overall. This weekend we are going to start playing knockout games to see who will win the overall cup. I will keep updated about what happens.

Actions stations!

This term our inquiry focus is "actions speak louder than words", we have already started working on our inquiry focus and the other day we went down to the Hanamatua stream to do mulching. It took us half the day, but we got it done. Teifi and I are also going to do a project, so keep an eye out for any posts about our project. :)

One word!

Last week we chose one word that we wanted to work on for the whole term. It took me awhile to chose a word, but in the end I chose a really good word. I also added some quotes on the bottom. :)

ME!!!!!!!!!

Kia ora Room 4 at Blaketown school, I made I slideshow to say who I am and explain all about me. I hope you learn alot about me! :)

With Good Friends we have Hope!

Learning Intention: I am sharing my thoughts about bullying at school

I choose this quote because whenever myself or someone else gets bullied, I always say something to the bully, because bullying is a big problem. The truth is that when someone is bullied quite often no one says anything. But if you see something being bullied you should say something, because otherwise it could get worse and something bad could happen. Bullying is not okay and if someone says something quite often the bullying will stop. Remember if you just stand and watch someone being bullied you are a BYSTANDER! If you become a bystander, you become part of the problem. So when you see someone being bullied you need to say something.

Last week in our class, we made this wall about bullying. On the red pieces of paper, we wrote what we liked at school, on the orange we wrote about what makes a good friend, and on the yellow what makes a bad friend. Then we each got given to pieces of paper and we had to write two different things we would do if someone was being bullied, and then the teacher joined all of them up it to a paper chain. Then lastly the hands in the photo is what we bring to the class. On my one of my paper chain bits I put, next time I see someone being bullied I will not be a bystander and say something.

Duathlon

Success Criteria:
  • It makes sense when I read it
  • I have used capital letters and full stops correctly
  • I have had my blogging buddy check my blog before I publish it

LI: I am sharing some of my ideas, feelings and thoughts on my blog about the Duathlon today!

  1. I had to run 3 laps to start, 2 laps bike and 2 laps run.
  2. I came 3rd.
  3. I was so exhausted.
  4. It was really hard.
  5. I was so proud of myself.

It was a warm, sunny Wednesday morning, 30 year 6 girls lined up nervously. "On your marks," Bang. We all sprinted. I ran 1 lap of the field, two more to go, I thought. Everyone was cheering. I finished the 3 laps and sprinted up to the bike transition. I put my helmet on and and ran my bike to the the entrance of the field. Then I hopped on to my bike.

I started biking as fast as I could, I passed 3 people. I finished my first lap, then I did my 2nd. I past` 2 people. I got to the exit of the field, hopped of my bike, went down the curb, then I hopped back on my bike and rode hard out back to the transition. Then I dumped my bike and my helmet down, then sprinted the last two laps.

I ran as fast as I could, I was currently in 4th place. I sprinted and passed my friend, and ran ahead of her, I dropped up to 3rd place, I finished the first lap and started the second. I sprinted the whole way. I sprinted to the finish line, I crossed it in 3rd place. I was so happy!

Then in sector 1 we had to draw our favourite character, sector 2 write about a character, 3 draw the setting, 4 write the plot, 5 draw our favourite part and in sector 6 write about our favourite part. To measure the sectors we learnt how to use a protractor. We also learnt about the radius, diameter and angles. Here is my work.
